About Susan Senft, M.D. - Dedicated to VisionSusan H. Senft, M.D. the founder of Island Eye Care, Inc. is dedicated to vision by offering her patients advanced LASIK technology, eye care, cosmetic treatments and optical services. Dr. Senft is a highly skilled surgeon bringing over 27 years of worldwide ophthalmologic expertise. Under her direction, Dr. Senft's number one goal is to establish confidence in her patients and provide the highest quality, state-of-the-art technology to facilitate quality medical care. Dedicated to delivering the best level of eye care available, Dr. Senft has two offices conveniently located in Kona and Waikoloa capable of providing the Big Island with a total range of medical and surgical eye care services.
Dr. Senft was born in Washington, D.C. the daughter of a retired physician; she graduated summa cum laude from the University of Dubuque. Thereafter she attended George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, graduating as a member of the King Kane Honor Society. She finished her surgical internship in San Francisco and subsequent residency in Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Senft attended post-graduate studies at Stanford University and then completed a one year fellowship in the fields of pediatric Ophthalmology, anterior segment (cataract, glaucoma, corneal transplant) and Oculoplastics at the prestigious King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia under the direction of Dr. David Paton.
While in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Senft was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at King Saud University and the acting head for the division of Pediatric Ophthalmology. There she was responsible for training residents and fellows and orchestrating numerous basic science and clinical research projects involving the study of retinoblastoma (a rare childhood eye cancer), glaucoma, and cataracts. During that period, she performed over 5,000 eye surgeries, published 28 articles in leading ophthalmic journals, and presented more than 50 papers and posters at international medical meetings.
Besides participating with volunteer surgical eye expeditions worldwide, Dr. Senft has always enjoyed life in a multi-cultural setting. Although she has lived in other regions of the world, Hawaii and the Big Island in particular, offer a unique opportunity to work in a situation of need combined with a supportive environment. To this end, she is committed to providing the highest standard of eye care for families in the spirit of Aloha.

Dr. Senft believes that health and human rights issues deserve attention both abroad and at home. She has volunteered her expertise in ophthalmology working closely with health professionals by providing guidance, training and direct patient care.
Besides participating with volunteer surgical eye expeditions to Central and South America, and Bangladesh, China, Bulgaria and India she enjoys teaching surgical and clinical skills and is on the ASCRS (American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons) Foundation Pediatric Blindness Treatment Committee. She is affiliated with Surgical Eye Expeditions, International and has volunteered with Orbis International.
